2Blocks is an independent game studio based in Montreal, Canada. It was founded in 2017 by Colin, a seasoned game programmer who has worked in both AAA and indie games such as WATCH_DOGS for Ubisoft and Darkest Dungeon for RedHook. Data Defense is the company's first title - a minimalist tower defense game set in cyberspace.
Prior to the studio's founding, Colin worked on Data Defense intermittently since 2011. After an initial release of the game on flash portals, its engine was reworked from flash into Unity for an eventual Desktop and Mobile release of the game. With a new release came a fresh coat of paint, a new soundtrack, and an overhaul of the game's design. Jeremy Dumouchel, artist and musician as well as long time friend of Colin's, would help with the update. The Fires
During the development of the game, Colin and Jeremy (roommates at the time) were victims of 2 house fires, not 6 months apart. They lost everything in the first fire, though online back-ups of the game files survived. Relocated and thinking themselves safe, they began to rebuild their lives. But during the 6 months between the fires, they had to contend with what one exterminator claimed as "the largest bedbug infestation he'd ever seen in his career." Then, the second fire eruped. And though it would force them to leave their infested home, the infestation had ruined much of their repurchased belongings. The Aftermath
After landing on their feet, and taking some time off to recouperate, development resumed. Steam has since greenlit Data Defense's release on its platform. 2Blocks looks forward to launching the project on other Desktop platforms as well as moving on to new projects.
